Projectile motion lab answers for A Level physics (free PDF download)

The method and the results are on the projectile motion lab. Do the analysis yourself first, then check the answers below.

Quick answer: Projectile motion combines a constant horizontal velocity with a vertical motion of constant acceleration g = 9.81 m/s² downwards. These answers go with the Physics 11-12 lab on projectile motion: the graph, the calculations, the uncertainties and the conclusion explained, for all 8 analysis questions.

With H = 0.85 m the time of fall is 0.416 s for every release. The launch speeds 1.49, 2.02 and 2.47 m/s follow from the ranges. Your values will differ, but the time of fall must be the same for all releases.

Question 2 Launch speeds

v = x ÷ t: low 0.62 ÷ 0.416 = 1.49 m/s; medium 0.84 ÷ 0.416 = 2.02 m/s; high 1.03 ÷ 0.416 = 2.47 m/s.

Question 3 Same time of fall

The vertical motion starts with zero vertical velocity each time and depends only on H and g. The horizontal velocity does not affect the time.

Question 4 Percentage uncertainty

Low: 0.01 ÷ 0.62 = 1.6 %. High: 0.01 ÷ 1.03 = 0.97 %. 1.6 % and 1.0 %.

Question 5 Prediction

t = √(2.40 ÷ 9.81) = 0.4946 s. x = 1.49 × 0.4946 = 0.74 m.

Question 6 Impact speed

vy = gt = 9.81 × 0.416 = 4.08 m/s. v = √(2.47² + 4.08²) = √(6.10 + 16.65) = 4.77 m/s.

Question 7 Sources of error

Air resistance reduces the horizontal speed, and the marble may leave the table with a slight downward angle or spin. Measuring from the wrong point of the marble also changes x.

Question 8 Improvement

Take more landings per release and use their mean, or use a camera to measure the speed at the table edge directly for comparison.
