The method and the results are on the friction and inclined planes lab. Do the analysis yourself first, then check the answers below.

Quick answer: Newton's second law states that the resultant force equals mass times acceleration, ΣF = ma. These answers go with the Physics 11-12 lab on friction and inclined planes: the graph, the calculations, the uncertainties and the conclusion explained, for all 8 analysis questions.

Here are the friction and inclined planes lab answers for physics grades 11-12: graph, calculations, uncertainties and conclusion. First do the lab yourself, then compare, and go back to the lesson if needed.

The sample data give μs = 0.51 for wood on wood and 0.89 for wood on sandpaper. Your values will depend on the materials, but the rougher surface should always give a steeper slipping angle and the mass should not matter.

Friction and inclined planes lab answers: the analysis explained

Question 1 Mean heights

Wood: (0.27 + 0.28 + 0.26 + 0.29 + 0.27) ÷ 5 = 1.37 ÷ 5 = 0.274 m; half the range = (0.29 − 0.26) ÷ 2 = 0.015 m. Sandpaper: 2.00 ÷ 5 = 0.400 m.

Question 2 Angles

Wood: sin θ = 0.274 ÷ 0.60 = 0.4567, so θ = 27.2°. Sandpaper: sin θ = 0.400 ÷ 0.60 = 0.6667, so θ = 41.8°.

Question 3 Proving the method

At the limit, mg sin θ = μs N and N = mg cos θ. Dividing gives μs = tan θ, and the mass cancels.

Question 4 Coefficients

Wood: tan 27.2° = 0.51. Sandpaper: tan 41.8° = 0.89.

Question 5 Uncertainty

For h = 0.26 m: tan θ = 0.481. For h = 0.29 m: tan θ = 0.552. Half the range = ±0.04, so μs = 0.51 ± 0.04.

Question 6 Sliding down

a = g(sin 30° − μk cos 30°) = 9.81 × (0.500 − 0.40 × 0.866) = 9.81 × 0.1536 = 1.5 m/s².

Question 7 Effect of mass

Both the friction limit and the weight component along the slope are proportional to the normal force, so the mass cancels and the angle stays the same.

Question 8 Improvement

Use a smaller increase in angle (a screw jack or a slow hand lift), measure the angle with a digital angle gauge, and average more trials.
