Which quantity is conserved in every collision between two objects when no external net force acts? A 2.0 kg cart at 3.0 m/s sticks to a stationary 1.0 kg cart. What is their speed afterwards? What distinguishes an elastic collision from an inelastic one? Two identical carts collide elastically head-on and one is initially at rest. What happens? A 1500 kg car and a 1500 kg car move towards each other at equal speeds and stick. What is their velocity after the collision? A student says kinetic energy decreased, so momentum was not conserved. What is wrong? Masses 1.0 kg at x = 0 and 3.0 kg at x = 0.40 m. Where is the centre of mass? The centre of mass of two colliding carts moves at 0.80 m/s before the collision. What is its velocity after, with no external net force? In a collision the speed of approach is 6.0 m/s and the speed of separation is 6.0 m/s. What type is it? Cart A loses 0.40 kg m/s of momentum in a collision with cart B. What is the change in momentum of B?
Condition for conserved total momentum? — Zero net external force on the system. What is conserved in an elastic collision? — Both momentum and kinetic energy. What is conserved in an inelastic collision? — Momentum only; kinetic energy decreases. Final velocity when two objects stick together? — v = (m₁u₁ + m₂u₂) ÷ (m₁ + m₂). Elastic collision speed shortcut? — Speed of approach equals speed of separation. Centre of mass position formula? — x_cm = Σmx ÷ Σm. Centre of mass velocity formula? — v_cm = total momentum ÷ total mass. Why does v_cm stay constant in a collision? — Internal forces cancel; net external force is zero. Equal masses, elastic, one at rest? — They exchange velocities. Unit of momentum? — kg m/s (same as N s). Keep going with Lina
